Making my Student House Feel Like a Home
After moving out of student accommodation and into a flat for second year I am starting to feel like an adult. Although finding a house and moving was stressful, its so calming to have my own (TIDY) space. However, student houses are typically plain and a bit mismatched so i have been on a mission to make our flat more homely.
Hopefully this blog post will also inspire you and give you some (cheap!!!!) ideas on how to make your space feel like yours!
Plants ( a cliche I know)
Plants are an amazing and cheap way to bring some colour to your empty windows and shelves. If you are able to keep real ones alive then a tip I have learnt the hard way is to NOT leave them by radiators that get left on. It was a very sad but important lesson to learn and I am very sorry to those plants that got scorched by the heat.
Ikea and supermarkets are great places to find cheap indoor plants.
If possible it can be a nice idea to paint your own plant pots. I painted this one like a Troll doll so that the plant leaves look like its hair. Personalising things like this can be a really quirky and interesting way to brighten a room. For inspiration Pinterest is always a winner!

For those like me who find it hard enough to remember to drink water ourselves let alone water a plant, cheap fake plants can be found in Primark, Wilko and places like B&M.

Create a Photo wall
Another cheap but more personal touch is creating a wall of photos, maps of places you have been or tickets. This can be a great way of decorating the bland walls of student homes and with websites like FreePrints its so cheap to do. Just be prepared that over time they will all slowly fall off no matter how much BluTac you use.
Command Strips

Hopefully some of these tips are helpful and can help inspire you. If you are still stuck on ideas Pinterest is a great way to find inspiration and easy DIYs you can do to adapt what you already have.

Command Strips
Command strips can be a great way of hanging decor in rented houses as they don't damage the walls. I used command strips to put up some pictures that I have painted.
Command strips can also be used for hanging fairy lights and Christmas decorations.
Colourful Cushions and Throws
Again typically students houses have boring and bland sofas some fun cushions and quirky throws can be a good way of brightening a living room. My boyfriends mum knitted and crocheted some bright, rainbow throws which we have used to decorate the sofas. On top of these we have added all different shapes and sizes of cushions including: doughnuts, unicorns and even a stormtrooper head. This has brought all our flat mates different personalities together.
Rugs
Unfortunately student homes typically have ugly carpets which hide stains easily. However, a fun rug can really make a room so much more homely and make the floors look slightly more appealing. I haven't managed to find one yet that will fit in our living room but I have found some as examples.
Dunelm: £49

Rugs can often be quite expensive, especially for students so might be worth looking in second hand shops.
